FALL 2016: Fit Fridays

September 9 (11:00-12:00) Fit Friday: What is stress? What are the negative health effects of stress and what are some coping strategies for stress? With Sherry Knoppers, Professor of Nursing  

  • Location:  Science Building Room 122
  • Class Description:  Stress has an immediate effect on your body. In the short term, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but chronic stress puts your health at risk. Learn exactly what stress does to your body, your health, and your well-being. You will also learn positive and healthy ways to manage stress so negative health consequences can be reduced.

October 7 (10:15-11:15) Fit Friday: What is the anatomy of the “core”? Why is it important? With Melanie Schiele Gady, Professor of Exercise Science 

  • Location:  Science Building Room 122
  • Class Description:  Core exercises train the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips, and abdomen to work in harmony. This leads to better balance and stability for life on the playing field or in daily activities. In fact, most sports, daily life activities, and physical activities depend on stable core muscles. Come to this workshop and find out the anatomy of the “core”, the importance of keeping these muscles strong and functional for life, and also learn some standing, sitting/chair, and floor “core” exercises.

October 28 (1:00-2:00) Fit Friday: Introduction to Machine Weight Training and Basic Cardio with Mike Cupples, Professor of Exercise Science

  • Location: Ford Field House Room 102
  • Class Description: This 50-60 minutes of machine based resistance training will provide participants knowledge on basic strength training routines and information regarding muscular strength and endurance building concepts. This session will include education, explanation of skills, and proper warm up and cool down techniques. The work out is designed for all ages and genders for lifelong skill development with strength training  and basic aerobic concepts. Dress comfortable for exercise.

November 4 (10:15-11:15) Fit Friday: Nutrition Nuggets with Leigh Kleinert, Professor of Biological Sciences 

  • Location: Science Building Room 122
  • Class Description: How well are you nourishing your organs? Whether you love to cook or eat fast food, how do these nutrients help or hinder the functioning of your organs? Which nutrients are the most important and how much do you need? Learn to make some simple, inexpensive meals at home – or some smarter choices when eating out – that your organs will thank you for.

November 11 (12:00-1:00) Fit Friday: Exercise and Mental Health with Jodi Gee, Associate Professor of Exercise Science 

  • Location: Ford Field House Balcony Room 304
  • Class Description: Come experience for yourself and learn about how exercise improves mental health.
